THE FINAL GIRLS Premieres Tonight!!!

It's been a long but amazing week for all of us film crazed night owls at Midnight Madness. Now it's time to wrap it all up with one of the most anticipated genre films of the year. The Final Girls had its world premiere at SXSW earlier this year, and if the audience's reaction was any indication, it's poised to become a new classic.

So come on out tonight and try not to think about the fact that Midnight Madness is over for another year.

The Final Girls Screening Times:
Sat, Sept 19, 11:59 PM RYERSON
Sun, Sept 20, 5:00 PM SCOTIABANK

YAKUZA APOCALYPSE Premieres Tonight (and Takashi Miike is going to be in the house!!!)!!!

A new Takashi Miike film playing Midnight Madness is always exciting, but for all of the times his films have screened, he's only been able to attend ONCE. That was all the way back when Fudoh: The New Generation screened in 1996. So... it's been awhile.

Miike returns to Midnight Madness with Yakuza Apocalypse, which by most accounts is one of his wildest to date! How can you not be excited?

Yakuza Apocalypse Screening Times:
Fri, Sept 18, 11:59 PM RYERSON
Sat, Sept 19, 3:00 PM SCOTIABANK

SOUTHBOUND Premiere Tonight!!

Horror anthologies have become so widespread in recent years, it's almost expected that at least one will be in most genre film festivals. The horror anthology that's screening in this year's Midnight Madness programme has a twist. It's not ACTUALLY an anthology film. While Southbound is directed by multiple directors, and is from the producers of the V/H/S series, the segments all overlap with each other and tell a single story. None of the segments could stand on their own. This isn't just a slapped together collection of short films.

I think what makes me most excited about the film though, is that Southbound was shot in secret. Until its premiere at TIFF was announced, it didn't even have an IMDb page. In a world where most filmmakers start releasing information, images, teaser trailers, etc. before filming has even started, it's so refreshing to be able to go into a film knowing VERY little about it.

SOUTHBOUND screens:
Wed, Sept 16, 11:59 PM RYERSON
Fri, Sept 18, 6:00 PM SCOTIABANK
Sun, Sept 20, 3:30 PM SCOTIABANK

THE MIND'S EYE Premieres Tonight!!!

What are you doing tonight? There's this little film festival called TIFF happening, so I hope you’re watching a movie or two. But which ones, right? These blogs here are meant to make you want to see the films playing in the Midnight Madness programme, and today, I think that’s a very easy task. All I need to say is...

The Mind's Eye premieres tonight at midnight. Come out and watch a drifter with psychic powers battle with an evil doctor and his crew of telekinetic assassins.

*axe drop*

The Mind’s Eye screens:
Tue, Sept 15, 11:59 PM RYERSON

HARDCORE Premieres Tonight!!

It’s time! Take your Gravol, and get your tickets for tonight’s world premiere of Hardcore at the Ryerson Theatre. If you’ve seen the Biting Elbows music video for "Bad Motherfucker," you know what you’re in for and I’m not sure if I can hype the film better than Colin Geddes did in his program note, when he said:

“...strap yourself in, put your helmet on, and apply all the action-movie adjectives, because this time they ain't just spewing hyperbole: Hardcore is a non-stop, action-packed, white-knuckle, crackerjack thrill ride, and once it starts, there is no getting off!”

Hardcore screens:
Sat, Sept 12, 11:59 PM RYERSON
Mon, Sept 14, 4:15 PM SCOTIABANK
Fri, Sept 18, 1:00 PM SCOTIABANK

BASKIN Premieres Tonight!!

I’ve heard of Turkish Delight, but Turkish Horror?!?! That’s what Baskin, the debut film of Can Evrenol promises to unleash on the thrill seeking audience at the Ryerson tonight when the clock strikes midnight.

When a squad of police respond to a request for backup, they enter the basement of a mysterious building, where they discover things that make them wish they had ignored the call. Tonight’s screening might bring back memories of when Martyrs screened at TIFF; and if you were there, you know you won’t want to miss Baskin.

Check out the trailer for a taste of what’s in store.

Baskin screens:
Fri, Sept 11, 11:59 PM RYERSON
Sun, Sept 13, 4:00 PM SCOTIABANK
Thu, Sept 17, 6:00 PM SCOTIABANK

GREEN ROOM Premieres Tonight!!

It took Jeremy Saulnier 6 years to make his second film, Blue Ruin, after his debut feature, Murder Party. Thankfully it’s only been 2 years between Blue Ruin and his new film; the punk rockers vs. skinheads siege film, Green Room.

The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, but it screens tonight for the first time in North America to kick off Midnight Madness. Like Borat, Dredd, and The Raid before it, Green Room is ready to set the tone for this year’s line-up in a huge way!

Green Room screening times:
Thu, Sept 10th, 11:59 PM RYERSON
Fri, Sept 11th, 8:45 AM SCOTIABANK
Sat, Sept 12, 2:15 PM BLOOR HOT DOCS

THE CHICKENING Premieres Tonight!!

It’s that time again. Everywhere you go, the smell of popcorn’s in the air. TIFF is upon us once again, so I hope you’ve been stocking up on your sleep, because for the next ten nights, Midnight Madness is going to keep you up waaaay past your bedtime.

It’s been awhile since a short film screened at Midnight Madness. Not since The Legend of Beaver Dam opened the festival in 2010. Tonight, before Patrick Stewart graces the screen as a skinhead in Green Room, the Midnight Madness audience will be treated to the clucked up lunacy of… The Chickening!!!

The Chickening screens with Green Room:
Thu, Sept 10th, 11:59 PM RYERSON
Fri, Sept 11th, 8:45 AM SCOTIABANK
Sat, Sept 12, 2:15 PM BLOOR HOT DOCS
