CG Magazine's 'Geek Friendly TIFF Awards' Honours SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS, DREDD 3D, LORDS OF SALEM, and ABC's OF DEATH!

Comics and Gaming Magazine has posted their favourite 'geeky' films from the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, with several Midnight Madness selections taking away some of their prizes.

Rob Zombies Lords of Salem picked up their 'Best Horror' honour, the star-studded Seven Psychopaths won for Future Cult Classic, The ABC's Of Death earned a 'Best Body Count' nod and, in another slap in the face of the Sly Stallone abomination of 1995, Alex Garland-penned Dredd 3D  snagged the 'Finally Got It Right' award.

Check out all the awards here, and congrats to all the winners!

SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS Wins Midnight Madness' Audience Choice Award!

This year's winner of The Blackberry Midnight Madness People's Choice Award is Seven Psychopaths!

Director Martin McDonagh responded on behalf of the cast:
We were so thrilled to be a part of the Toronto Film Festival, to take part in the crazy fun of a Midnight Madness screening, and now so honored to be given the People's Choice Award. On behalf of the cast I'd like to thank everyone who voted, and everyone involved in the festival, from the programmers to the volunteers. It felt like most democratic film festival I've ever been to, and we had such a blast being there.

Congratulations to the cast and crew! And remember, every vote counts.

Bonny the Shih Tzu from Seven Psychopaths gives Midnight Madness "two paws up" or at least that's what Bonny said on our Facebook page!

Day One with Kari's Scaries

Yesterday was my first full day at TIFF and my first Midnight Madness screening (thanks to the Kari's Scaries bursary program), and all I can say is this: If you love genre cinema, this is something you must experience at least once in your life.

We headed out of Possum Holler, Tennessee at insane o'clock on Thursday morning, rolling into Toronto fourteen hours later. In case you're curious, much of Canada looks like this:

Incidentally, this is a visual aesthetic that is shared my most of Kentucky, Ohio and Michigan, so the drive was grueling but somewhat less than stimulating. Happily, most of Toronto looks like this:

...and our hotel looks like this:

...and even this:

...so things certainly got way more interesting and lots fancier.

We kicked off our day with a screening of Ben Wheatley's Sightseers, which was terrific and absolutely supports my theory that romantic comedies set in the bucolic British countryside are much better when lots of people get their heads cracked open. After that was a press screening of Midnight Madness selection John Dies at the End, (directeed by the great Don Coscarelli), which was completely batshit and a lot of fun. Next up was Pusher at the newly renovated Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, followed by the high point of the entire day: the Midnight Madness screening of Seven Psychopaths. The experience was spectacular; I wish I could see every movie with a theater full of 1,200 cheering genre nerds and Christopher Walken.

We're off to a screening of Dredd 3D (we missed its Midnight Madness premiere, sadly), followed by whatever we can squeeze in between it and tonight's MM screening of No One Lives.

Many thanks to the family and friends of Kari Ramjattan, in whose honor Kari's Scaries was established, and to Colin Geddes and the rest of the TIFF crew. Our reception has been amazing, and they're taking great care of us. Off to Day Two!

Eccentric Gentlemen of SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS: Sam Rockwell

I am really hoping for a dance scene in Seven Psychopaths, because while Christopher Walken likes to dance, so does Sam Rockwell. He gets it in most of his roles, even in on the moon in Moon, which you should see if you haven't).

Rockwell's Batman shows up for "Robin's Big Date."

And holy cats, he's a hooligan in the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

The Eccentric Gentlemen of SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS: Tom Waits

Seven Psychopaths premieres tonight, featuring the talents of many an eccentric artist and performer, including, singer/songwriter/raconteur, Tom Waits, a man of many talents and singular taste.

Tom Waits performs "Eggs and Sausage" in 1976.

A scene from Waits' Brechtian musical, The Black Rider, that makes me think that Waits would make a great Devil in any film.

Waits' "Jockey Full of Bourbon" opens Jim Jarmusch's Down By Law. Wait's starred in the movie along with John Lurie, Ellen Barkin and Roberto Begnini.

There's been speculation that Tom Waits was an inspiration for Heath Ledger's Joker. They both like a good story, it's true.

And if that isn't enough, here's an interview with Waits on NPR.

Eccentric Gentlemen of SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS: Christopher Walken

http://www.ineedmyfix.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Seven-Psychopaths-Christopher-Walken.jpg

Seven Psychopaths looks to be full of gentlemen of the eccentric persuasion, which is a good excuse to remember some of their best hijinx.  You might remember Christopher Walken dancing in Fatboy Slim's "Weapon of Choice":

But Walken dances like nobody's business and does a strip tease in Steve Martin's Pennies From Heaven (Thanks, Keith)

Also, Walken would like to have a tail, really: "I said how great it would be if actors had a tail because I have animals and a tail is so expressive." (Thanks, Miguel!)

I've heard that Walken would really like to have a show where he both dances and cooks. Get on that, please, producers.

Make Christopher Walken's chicken and pears before Seven Psychopaths and you'll have leftovers to savor the next day!

Empire readers plans their festival.

Empire Magazine picks six of programmer Colin Geddes' selections in, "22 Must Watch Movies From The Toronto Film Festival" --five from the Midnight Madness programme and one from the Vanguard programme. Although, by my count, there are only 20 films in the list. The last two must be secret and are surely two more Midnight Madness films.

Woman attempts to figure out what the last 2 films are...

SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS. Seven Posters.

In Bruges writer/director, Martin McDonagh's new dark comedy, Seven Psychopaths recently got a series of 7 character posters. One for each of its titular psychopaths, who're being played by an impressive ensemble cast including Sam Rockwell, Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken, Abbie Cornish, and Woody Harrelson. Sam's the man, so click on his poster below to be taken to Indiewire to check out all of them. Two of the posters have "Shih Tzu" as "Shit" jokes, but it's unclear if there are one or two Shih Tzus in the film. I guess we'll find out on the 7th.
